Most zero turn owners use their machines from spring to fall, but just because cooler temps are causing grass growth to slow doesn't mean you can't keep enjoying your Spartan. Did you know that a zero turn is just as useful to prepare your lawn for winter? Below are a few advantages to mowing with a zero turn in the fall that you may not know about.
Using your zero turn to mulch fallen leaves can actually improve the health of your lawn. When the grass is chopped into tiny pieces and spread evenly over the grass, the small leaf clippings that remain will break down and return nutrients to your lawn without damaging it. If done correctly, mowing your leaves during the fall has been proven to promote your grass turning green a little sooner in the spring as well as help to cut down on crabgrass and broadleaf weeds.
To make short order of mulching your leaves, consider investing in Spartan’s Mulch Baffling Kit. This attachment takes your grass and leaves and cuts them into even smaller clippings before distributing them onto the lawn. Contact your local Spartan Dealer for purchase information.
As the leaves begin to fall, you’ll actually find yourself mowing more frequently to avoid raking leaves. A zero turn mower is absolutely the quickest way to zip over your lawn, taking care of business in record time. These machines actually cut the leaf raking/bagging process in half. Talk about a timesaver! With our busy schedules and other projects to do around the house, free up some of that precious time and let your mower do the work.
A Spartan zero turn is equipped with “turf friendly” tires which help to prevent those nasty turn marks when you’re maneuvering in tight places. In the fall the ground tends to be more moist than it is in the summer. When scuff marks are created in the summer, the grass has a chance to regrow and cover up these spots. In the fall, most any mark left on the lawn will be that way all winter long. Use some TLC when making those turns, and rest assured that our tires will greatly minimize scuff marks.
Mowing with a Spartan zero turn not only gives you unbelievable maneuvering capabilities, but you are able to adjust the deck on the go with our deck height adjustment system. Every time you mow in the fall you’ll need to adjust your deck down a tad. Ultimately, your lawn should be about 2 to 2 ½ inches high by the time winter arrives. Anything less can damage your lawn. Our Xtreme Turf Flow (XTF) decks have been redesigned and enhanced to give you all the options you need when mowing throughout the year. This enhanced deck system comes standard on ALL models 42"-72".
