MOW IN THE KNOW

Summer is winding down, school has begun and our schedules seem to be getting busier.  Sometimes it’s easy to take things for granted, overlooking the basic steps and fundamentals of everyday household chores and move into the fast and furious mode. Unfortunately we see this trend spill over into the mowing world year after year. Mowing speeds increase, safety is disregarded and can sometimes produce devastating mistakes. Some of these mistakes lead to unnecessary cuts, burns, fractures, amputations and even death.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 274,000 lawnmower-related injuries in 2015. Thirteen thousand of those injured were children and adolescents younger than 19 years old. Every year since these numbers have risen nationwide.

At Spartan Mowers we not only want our customers to have the best mower at your fingertips, but we also desire that you always know how you mow, how you shouldn’t mow, and how to enjoy the mow! We build the safest mower in the industry - but there are still some basics you cannot overlook when you are cutting the grass. After discussing this yearly trend, our team of professionals  have compiled a list of safety tips for you to keep in mind - especially during these late summer months.

MOWING TIPS FROM OUR PROS:

  1. Don’t let your lawnmower become a high-powered weapon. Check your lawn before you start your mower. Walk around your yard. Pick up rocks, toys, sticks or other objects that can be thrown by the blades. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reminds us that lawnmower blades can shoot objects through the grass chute at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. That’s fast enough to cause serious injuries, break windshields on nearby vehicles  and windows of nearby homes.

  2. Don’t mow wet grass. Mowing damp or wet grass can cause the grass to jam the blades and grass catcher.

  3. Never use your hands to disentangle wet grass or other materials from around the blade or grass catcher. Use a broom handle, stick or a similar object to remove the debris.

  4. Protect your eyes. Wear sunglasses or safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying objects and the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays.

  5. Protect your ears. Lawnmowers are loud. According to Purdue University, a power mower produces 96 decibels (dB) of noise. Prolonged exposure to sounds higher than 85 dBs can cause noise-induced hearing loss.

  6. Be aware of others, especially children. When you’re mowing, be aware of the people around you. If a person approaches the mower, shut it off or disengage the blades until the person passes.

  7. Take it slow and steady when mowing inclines and hills. One of the best things about owning a Spartan Mower is the ability to cut your mowing time in half. However, when it comes to the hills and inclines, the last thing you want to do is go fast. Fortunately, all Spartan Mowers are equipped with GT Trac for precision weight distribution, precision balance, and precision control. Not only will this help you mow on the inclines, but it will also aid in keeping you safe.

  8. Mow forward. Not only can mowing backward interfere with the performance of the mower, but it can also increase the likelihood of injuries to the mower operator and others.

  9. Children under the age of 18 need adult supervision if they are mowing with a zero-turn. Although they do enjoy mowing with our Spartans, along with that comes a lot of responsibility. The AAOS even recommends that children be at least 12 years old before they mow the lawn. Adults should supervise the child until he or she knows and follows the safety rules.

  10. Shut the lawnmower off before filling up the gas tank. Pouring gasoline on an idling engine may cause a dangerous and explosive fire.
